No. 1.

I let you know that yesterday at two o'clock in the afternoon I arrived in the city of Vicenza. I went to the tavern of N. There I met my godfather, the shoemaker N., and a butcher from Asiago. Today is the market. In this market I sold our cloth. For forty ells I obtained thirty kreuzers per ell, and for sixty ells of inferior cloth I obtained only twenty-five. With this money, and with the collection of our credit from the tailor N., I bought two cows, eight sheep, and six goats; for all these I paid one hundred and fifty guilders. With this livestock we will get milk, butter, and cheese for our household, and wool to clothe us all. Wine is expensive, I bought none; this year we must drink water.

Greet mother, your wife, your two sisters, and your brother for me. Give a kiss to your little son, the boy. I will stay here five more days, and on Thursday of next week I return to Roana. Meanwhile stay healthy and love me well.

I sold our linen there; for the 40 ells I received 30 kreuzers per ell, and for 60 ells of inferior quality only 21 kreuzers. With this money, and the debt collected from the tailor N., I bought 2 cows, 8 sheep, and 6 goats; for these I paid 150 guilders; from this livestock we will obtain milk, butter, and cheese for household needs, and wool for clothing. I bought no wine because it is expensive; this year we must drink water.

Greet mother, your wife, your two sisters, and your brother for me. Kiss your little boy! I will remain here for 5 more days, and next week on Thursday I will return to Roana. Farewell in the meantime, and love me!

Regarding the quarrel in which Kristel of Falesina was attacked by Jacob of Drischel in the main square of Pergine Castle, because the latter broke his boat in the large lake, and on account of which complaint was made to the authorities: I, Lindrick, parish priest and notary at Pergine, have settled that Jacob shall pay Kristel five carratelli of pounds in cash, half to the parish church within two months; item, pay the medical and surgical expenses, and in return Kristel shall drop the lawsuit for seven loads of fodder and the rest; they have promised me to do so and henceforth to be good friends. Done at Pergine Castle before me in the year of our Lord the Redeemer twelve hundred and eighteen, in the month of the wedding, the fourth day. Witnesses are two, Peter and Hans of Falesina. F. T.
