Daily Report.

Bozen, 27 May. The regulation of the Adige, a vital question for Southern Tyrol, has moved a significant step closer to its goal; yesterday, the Noce river was guided into its new bed near Mezzolombardo, and this momentous act was observed with fitting solemnity. It was heightened by the attendance of His Royal Highness Archduke Rainer and his son Archduke Heinrich, who had departed from here yesterday morning. In addition, His Majesty's Adjutant General, Major General Kellner, the District President of Brixen, and the District Captain of Bozen, as well as the Lieutenancy Councillor and Acting District President Count Terlago from Trient, alongside several generals, staff officers, civil authorities, and finally deputations from the neighboring municipalities, attended the event.

At the Nave ferry crossing, the arrival of Their Royal Highnesses was awaited, whereupon they proceeded to the point where a sluice decorated with a triumphal arch had been erected to receive the Noce into the new riverbed, and took their seats under the pavilion set up there. At 9:30, the key to the sluice was presented to His Royal Highness Archduke Rainer, who opened it immediately. A military brass band summoned from Trient accompanied the solemn act with festive tunes, and the surging waters rushed roaring into their new channel. Once this ceremony was concluded, Engineer Meusburger, who had directed these hydraulic works with uncommon talent and skill, was granted the high honor of receiving from the hands of His Royal Highness the Golden Civil Merit Cross with Crown, a token of supreme recognition brought by His Majesty's Adjutant General. In closing, the Acting District President Count Terlago took the floor to express, in a fitting address, the importance of the act and its auspicious consequences for the entire region, together with the gratitude due to His Majesty the Emperor, the noble promoter of this undertaking. — For technical reasons, only a portion of the river could initially be diverted into the new bed; meanwhile, the work on the complete regulation of the Adige is progressing swiftly and steadily toward completion. Major General Kellner has already delivered the welcome news that the extension of the Kaltern drainage canal has received His Majesty's approval; for the cut at Masetto, approval of a new, comprehensive project is now confidently awaited, following the grant of the previous one.

— On the 25th of this month, Major General Kellner conducted the inspection of the now-completed works ordered last year by supreme command under Colonel Körber to repair the Adige breach near Salurn; he expressed his complete satisfaction with the execution of these structures, entrusted to Engineer Hilbe. The delighted population of Salurn likewise expressed their gratitude for His Majesty's grace by organizing several festivities on this occasion.

1852 at a glance

The year 1852 in Merano was shaped by the political and administrative changes of neo-absolutism, accompanied by civic engagement in social and educational fields. While regional infrastructure projects such as the Adige river regulation and railway planning progressed, natural events such as fires, livestock disease, and the vine fungus burdened the local economy. At the same time, cultural patronage and the development of early paths for visitors underscored the growing importance of the spa destination. →
