Austrian Monarchy.

Meran, 24 Aug. (Corresp.) Since the supreme imperial approval was received here to expand the gymnasium in Meran, hitherto consisting of six classes, into a higher gymnasium of eight classes, the municipal magistrate and the local Catholic association have displayed vigorous activity in procuring all instructional materials in order to open this expanded educational institution in accordance with the spirit and requirements of the new curriculum by 10 September of this year. The Benedictine Abbey of Marienberg, which has always distinguished itself in the administration of this educational institution, has once again, with the continued active involvement of its worthy abbot, assigned the most capable individuals from its convent to this worthy cause; and among the eight professors for this year's seven classes, we also count the conventual priest Father Albert Jäger, hitherto laudably known as a history lecturer at the University of Innsbruck.

May God grant prosperity to our new institution! If, besides the duty of acknowledging all favorable fortunes as graces from Above with humble gratitude, one may also touch upon the willingness to make sacrifices with which people in Meran have striven to found, maintain, and expand this fine institution, one might well say that it deserves fortunate flourishing, since very limited means heighten the magnitude and value of these sacrifices.

Our beautiful, pleasant region and mild, healthy climate give cause to hope for high attendance at our expanded gymnasium.

1849 at a glance

The year 1849 in Merano was heavily shaped by educational reforms, notably the conversion of the gymnasium into an eight-class upper gymnasium with the support of Marienberg Abbey, alongside ecclesiastical and political debates. Prominent figures like Beda Weber, who relocated to Frankfurt, influenced regional discourse, while local authorities dealt with fiscal disputes and natural disasters. Concurrently, security concerns such as regional military fortifications and the reform of the defense system came to the forefront. →
