Innsbruck, Aug. 18. Under the date of Aug. 3, upon the petition of the Catholic-Constitutional Association of Merano, the Ministry of Education approved the expansion of the local gymnasium into a higher gymnasium. The wording of the high ministerial decree deserves to be quoted here in several respects.
“The Catholic-Constitutional Association,” it reads, “declares that it will provide for the premises and teaching materials, while Marienberg Abbey will provide the teachers. Since the completion of existing gymnasiums is entirely desirable, and no burdens appear to accrue to public funds here, the high Ministry, provided the above commitments are fulfilled and the provisions of the ministerial decrees of July 22 and 26 of this year are strictly observed, will view with pleasure and recognition of the patriotic efforts that make it possible the provisional opening of the 7th gymnasium class for the school year 1849/50 in Merano.”
The commitments set by the high Ministry of Education as a condition for opening the higher gymnasium have already been fulfilled: the Benedictine Abbey of Marienberg has appointed the professors—youthful figures yet already experienced in teaching—distributed the subjects according to talent and aptitude, and is in communication with the Catholic-Constitutional Association in order to procure the necessary premises and teaching materials according to a sensible plan requiring minimal costs.
Therefore, no further obstacle should stand in the way of opening the Merano higher gymnasium, which will consist of seven classes for the 1849/50 school year. As we learn, the opening will take place on September 10.
