Following imperial approval, the Meran gymnasium is being expanded into an eight-class higher gymnasium. With the cooperation of Marienberg Abbey—which is sending Father Albert Jäger as a professor among others—and local authorities, the opening is scheduled for September 1849.
The Ministry of Education approves the expansion of the Merano gymnasium into a higher gymnasium for the 1849/50 school year. Marienberg Abbey provides the teaching staff, while the Catholic-Constitutional Association arranges premises and learning materials. The opening of the seventh class is scheduled for September 10.
A review of the 1848/49 school year at the Merano Gymnasium commends the introduction of modern subjects such as physics and foreign languages, while criticizing the persistence of the class-teacher system instead of specialized subject teachers. It further appeals to the principles of academic freedom and meaningful education beyond mere rote learning.
