Passeier likewise celebrated the birthday of His Imperial and Royal Majesty Ferdinand I—announced to the entire valley already on the eve and then with the earliest morning bell by mortar salutes—in the parish churches of St. Leonhard and St. Martin with festive solemnity, and in the remaining pastoral stations with quiet devotion, in so participating and heartfelt a manner as could ever be expected of the people of Passeier, held in high esteem for their faithful loyalty to Austria's ruler and their hero Andreas Hofer. Following this ecclesiastical commemoration, which was also joined with a generous contribution for the disaster victims of Pesth, a genial and cheerful circle at the Sandwirthshause brought this splendid holiday to a close over a meal of 32 covers, with solemn toasts, singing, and delightfully surprised, moved, and inspired by a poem *) composed by a most venerable member of the gathering.
