Botzen, 2 January. Yesterday evening, a society of musical dilettantes staged a grand academy in the local theatre, in which many ladies and young women of this town honourably participated. Mr Schwarz distinguished himself particularly through his pure and remarkably agile violin playing, Mr Kapeller through his soulful performance on the flute, and Mr Don through his handling of the oboe, which was as dexterous as it was agreeable. The concertos for these three instruments were gracefully alternated with overtures and choruses from celebrated recent operas; the precise and accurate ensemble playing of all participants deserved no less admiration and unreserved praise than the distinguished skill of the individual soloists. The substantial yield for the local charitable institution, which amounted to a net 220 florins in imperial currency, reflects great credit upon the significant merits of the amateur gentlemen, as well as upon the art-loving and charitable spirit of our town's residents; and the silent gratitude of many a poor invalid who, thanks to the proceeds of the aforementioned academy, is able to enjoy a warm room during this present harsh season, proves best that the residents of Botzen knew how to welcome the new year in a genuinely philanthropic manner.
