Daily report.

Meran, 4 March. A new fire disaster has struck our town. The fire broke out at noon in the timber yard of master carpenter Strobl next to the Hospital Church. In the gale-force wind then raging, the entire timber stock and the adjoining barn were already engulfed in flames when the efforts of the fire-fighting forces that rushed to the scene and the people pouring in from all directions succeeded in checking the devastation of the blaze, which had already caught the Passer Bridge. The entire timber stock and the barn, along with three cows inside, were nevertheless claimed by the flames; in addition, part of the adjoining vineyard was destroyed. There is reason to suspect that the workers' carelessness was to blame for the fire. All estates, the imperial-royal authorities, the clergy, and the student youth vied with one another to provide swift assistance during the calamity.
