Bozen, August 18. The thunderstorms this year, perhaps due to the heavy masses of snow in the highest mountain regions, are consistently very dangerous on account of hail. In Signat, Wolfsgruben-Sal, Unterplatten, Unter-Siffian, in Kolern, Kampen, and partly in Rentsch, terrible devastation has been caused by hailstorms; in the valley, the Adige and back-surging drainage ditches have wrought great destruction: maize across 120 Tagmad has been largely destroyed, and near us below Morizing entirely so. — A new disease has struck the grapes in Überetsch, Morizing, and partly near Bozen; unripe as they are, they turn ash-grey with mildew and fall off. The distress of those affected is great. Potato rot has also reappeared to a high degree, for instance near Meran and further up into the Vintschgau, in Ober-Bozen, etc. — Praschklet is already commanding a high price, much higher than last year. The price of wine is also likely to rise even further.

1851 at a glance
The year 1851 in Merano was heavily shaped by major social highlights such as the grand rifle festival endowed by Archduke John and high-ranking imperial visits. At the same time, social initiatives like the opening of a childcare institution and reports on the economic distress of winegrowers following storms highlighted the period's socio-economic challenges. Public life was further complemented by organizational developments at the local gymnasium and religious events. →
