Appeal

for the relief of the residents of the municipalities of Allgund and Gratsch near Meran, severely damaged by the natural disasters in the month of July 1850.

Tyroleans! Never did you allow the call for help to fade unheeded, from whatever part of our land it might have sounded.

Remember therefore also your sorely stricken brothers and countrymen in the municipalities of Allgund and Gratsch near Meran, who, as you know from the public gazettes, were so grievously damaged by the natural disasters of the month of July of this year.

Terribly did the destructive force of the elements unleash itself upon them; several human lives fell victim to this dreadful affliction; heaps of rubble scarcely indicate the sites where welcoming homes once stood; the livestock of many farms has been destroyed; inhospitable stone debris covers the meadows that were blooming shortly before, and the extensive vineyards of those municipalities.

Years of laborious industry by the inhabitants have thus been robbed not only of this year’s harvest, but hopes for the future have also been set back for years to come; in the meantime, these unfortunate people are abandoned to destitution, and regrettably many among them are reduced to beggary.

Tyroleans! Do not forsake your countrymen in this great distress! You know them, their diligence, and their endurance; you know that, like you, they do not ask for outside assistance until they are no longer capable of helping themselves.

Do not let their hope for your aid, their trust in your charity, their confidence in the support of their countrymen—their sole comfort in misfortune—be brought to naught. Amid the distant unfortunate and distressed, who also enjoy your sympathy, do not forget your brothers close at hand, your fellow countrymen!

Every donation, however small, is welcome; where many forces unite, even a small one becomes mighty.

The editorial office of the Tiroler Bote is prepared to receive charitable contributions, to publish them along with the names of the donors, and then to forward them to the honorable k. k. District Captaincy in Meran for distribution.

The author of this appeal remitted 10 fl. CM. to the editorial office to cover advertising fees, dedicating the remainder to the above purpose. In expressing our gratitude for this, we are pleased to be able to open this hopefully blessed collection with these
