Commemoration in Vienna for the Tyrolean and Vorarlberg Defenders of 1809

One reads in the Wiener Zeitung:

Commemorative ceremony for the deceased defenders of the homeland of Tyrol and Vorarlberg.

On the initiative and through the active cooperation of the local licensed innkeeper Joseph Lutz, a solemn requiem mass was held on 13 August of this year at 10 a.m. in Vienna's oldest church, St. Rupert's, by its reverend director, Mr. Anton Gärtner, for the deceased noble defenders of Tyrol and Vorarlberg from the year 1809, and at the same time two holy masses were read.

This uplifting ceremony was attended by: Mr. Johann Edler v. Hofer, son of Andreas Hofer, together with his family, as the closest relatives of this glorious departed hero; several clerical compatriots: the Rev. Mr. Joachim Haspinger, field priest, formerly Hofer's adjutant and commander; the Rev. Court Chaplain Mr. Michael Häußle, both of whom read the holy masses; further the aforementioned founder of this fine foundation, Mr. Joseph Lutz, who earned great merit during that perilous epoch, and finally 20 veterans, all of whom took part in the battle won on 13 August 1809 on the Bergisel. The number of other attendees was so large that one could hardly believe so many individuals from that grave epoch were currently present in Vienna.

Since this devotional service, which will henceforth take place annually on 13 August, was held so solemnly and movingly that even stranger hearts and minds, to whom those events are known only from history, were so moved that a tear of remembrance and gratitude flowed for these noble departed, the undersigned believes, with regard to the establishment of this commemoration, that he has not missed his purpose; he therefore informs every worthy compatriot thereof, and takes the liberty of extending the fitting invitation in advance for the coming year on the same month and day.
