1840

Overview
The year 1840 in Merano and its surroundings was marked by charitable initiatives at the beginning of the year, a devastating natural disaster caused by mudflows in the Vinschgau valley in June, and the establishment in September of a commemorative tradition in Vienna honoring the Tyrolean defenders of 1809. On 13 August 1840, a solemn memorial service was held in Vienna's St. Rupert's Church for the fallen Tyrolean and Vorarlberg defenders of 1809.
