Botzen, 3 Jan. The first day of the year was concluded here through an act of charity. As in the previous year, a society of amateur musicians kindly came together on New Year's Day to give a grand concert at the local theatre for the benefit of the local poor, in whose fully successful production several young ladies of this city also took an honourable part. Thus the beautiful was united with the good. In the performance, which was conducted by Mr Brenner, overtures and choruses from famous new operas alternated in a pleasant manner with delightful concertos. The whole was distinguished by precise collaboration. Excellent were the two concert pieces of the evening. Mr Gasser delighted everyone with his charming and graceful performance on the flute, which he knows how to handle in an exquisite manner; he received the most resounding applause. Above all, however, Mr Schwarz distinguished himself by his pure, uncommonly light playing on the violin in a very difficult piece; he drew tones from his instrument that aroused general admiration; one will not easily find an artist capable of handling this instrument with such grace and fluency. Repeated, stormy applause rewarded his obliging participation. The local charitable institution owes to the amateur musicians and to the artistic and charitable spirit of the local residents the considerable sum of 280 fl. 24 kr., which was increased to 523 fl. 24 kr. standard currency by the proceeds from the greeting-card exemption fees of 243 fl.
