Celebration of the imperial name day and charity theatre in Bozen

Botzen, 4 October. Today, marking the high name day of our beloved Emperor, was celebrated in this town in a quiet yet solemn and dignified manner. In the morning, a solemn high mass was held in the local parish church, attended by all civil and military authorities along with the majority of the inhabitants of the town and surrounding area, to pray united with the most fervent devotion to benevolent Providence for the long preservation of His Majesty. In the evening, an amateur company formed by theatre enthusiasts from the town's most prominent families performed, under full wax lighting of the house, the well-known play translated by Kotzebue, "The Deaf and Dumb". The proceeds were designated for the benefit of the nascent patriotic institute for the deaf and dumb. This noble dedication to the benefit of such a blessed institution was, given the well-known and often proven charitable spirit of the local townspeople, sufficient in itself to attract a very large audience. The performance was a complete success, and just as the players received general and undivided applause, the noble readiness with which they undertook the staging of this performance—vigorously supported in the orchestra by the gentleman amateur musicians with their customary compliance—likewise deserves public gratitude, as the sum of 255 florins was contributed to the fund of the said institute on this occasion.
