Charity and donations for poor relief funds in Bozen, Sillian, and Schlanders
In 1822, donations from the sale of New Year excuse cards in Bozen and the Schlanders judicial district raised 480 florins toward a new workhouse. The farming class in Schlanders contributed significantly to this effort. In Sillian, the charitable initiative for the local poor started by district judge Kaspar von Ottenthal in place of traditional greeting cards also saw increased contributions.

Bozen, Jan. 14. In the district town of Bozen, the excuse cards for the year 1822 met with an even more significant sale than in the previous year. The sum received for 656 cards (the list of which is contained in the newspaper supplement) amounts to 480 fl. 25 kr. and is intended for the adaptation of the newly to be established workhouse. The inhabitants of Bozen, as well as those from the district court area of Schlanders, have once again distinguished themselves on this occasion through their commendable sense of charity; and it is a particularly gratifying circumstance that the considerable sum of 91 fl. 7 kr. sent in by the district court of Schlanders was for the most part raised by purchasers from the farming class.
Sillian, Jan. 8. The common good requires only guidance. The voluntary gift for the poor at home instead of the usual New Year's greetings, so nobly initiated last year by the district judge Mr. Kaspar v. Ottenthal, has not only not ceased in recent days, but has appeared significantly increased for this locality. The blessing of the poor surely rose to heaven; but receive also, you donors! — herewith public thanks.
