Austrian Monarchy.
Graz, 18 August. One of the most important subjects of instruction has long been vacant at the local university. Universal history and the history of the Austrian states are currently covered by a lecturer who, despite all his efforts, does not appear equal to the task. The academic senate has taken great care to secure a celebrity for the chair of history; inquiries were directed to the foremost scholars of this discipline at the universities of Bonn, Leipzig, Freiburg, and Marburg, without achieving the desired result. Overtures were also made to Beda Weber and Mr. v. Pipitz; however, neither the former nor the latter can accept the call owing to commitments entered into in recent times. As is reported, the renowned Prof. Gfrörer from Freiburg now has the best prospects of receiving the appointment. Although a Protestant, this circumstance should hardly count against his person, as his scholarly endeavours have consistently proven sympathetic to Catholics. For our university, Gfrörer's appointment would in any case represent a most significant acquisition. (C. Bl. a. B.)

1851 at a glance
The year 1851 in Merano was strongly characterized by social highlights such as the grand regional shooting festival endowed by Archduke John and imperial honors for long-serving mayor Valentin Haller. At the same time, natural disasters including severe storms, crop failures, and devastating late-year floods challenged the solidarity and welfare of the local community. Important organizational decisions in education and social care accompanied these events. →
