We received on the 29th of last month from Meran a rejoinder to the letter "from the Etsch" published in our issue no. 168, concerning the conferral of honorary citizenship on a spa guest, which we did not accept, as a reply had already appeared in the Innsbr. Zeitung, and because the author of the rejoinder sent to us, with whose phrasing we could not agree, wanted his article printed anonymously. Now, on the 7th of this month, we have received a renewed demand to publish this rejoinder, referencing § 17 of the Press Law and threatening intervention by the public prosecutor's office in case of refusal. While we do not believe that § 17 can find application here, yet since the author of the rejoinder simultaneously writes that the "glaring inaccuracies and even a lie" contained in the letter from the Etsch compel him to press for publication, we have no hesitation in meeting this request insofar as we print verbatim from the rejoinder those passages which solely and exclusively serve to rectify the inaccuracies in the aforementioned article, namely: the mayor did not tear any profaned municipal coat of arms from the wall and put it into his pocket. That the citizens fully agree with the unanimous act of election by the municipal committee and with the report delivered upon request by the generally revered mayor, and do not regard it as a parody of their honour, is proven by the general sentiment, which in the space of eight months — that much time having elapsed since the conferral of honorary citizenship — showed not the slightest trace of a vote of no confidence. Rectification Regarding the Academic Call of Beda Weber to Graz

An excerpt from a letter by the Dean of Graz, Dr. Gabriel, refutes press reports claiming that Beda Weber had not been offered a post at the local university. Gabriel offers Weber the vacant chair of history and recalls his past contributions to the schools of Meran.

1851 at a glance

The year 1851 in Merano was strongly characterized by the Tyrolean target-shooting festival sponsored by Archduke John and celebrated solemnly in early summer. Alongside these large-scale festivities, public attention focused primarily on administrative reforms, social welfare measures, and the institutional development as well as personnel restructuring of the municipal school system. Religious events and regional economic themes also accompanied the public life of the spa town during this period. →
