Germany.

Frankfurt, 26 July. From a letter addressed to the cathedral capitular, actual ecclesiastical councillor, and parish priest of the local St. Bartholomew's Church, Mr. Beda Weber, by Dr. L. Gabriel, dated Gratz, 15 June 1851, we take the following passages, which may serve to rectify a claim spread by several newspapers—one all the more erroneous for having been made with great certainty (namely, that Mr. Beda Weber had not received any call to Grätz at all):

Very Reverend Parish Priest! Unforgettable to me are the conversations that Your Reverence once had with me in Botzen, just as your efforts on behalf of the schools in Meran have always remained dear and precious to my memory. Therefore in Gratz, through both somber and joyful days, I have often thought longing of Your Reverence. On 30 May of this year, the professor of history died here. For the reoccupation of the vacant chair, as dean I first take the path of appointment and turn above all to Your Reverence with the most humble inquiry: whether Your Reverence would accept such a call, and under what conditions . . . . I make my proposal in the most joyful hope of soon embracing the dearest new colleague, and request a very prompt reply . . . . Gratz, 15 June 1851 Dr. L. Gabriel. (Fr. O.- P.- A.-Z.)

The year 1851 in Merano was strongly characterized by the Tyrolean target-shooting festival sponsored by Archduke John and celebrated solemnly in early summer. Alongside these large-scale festivities, public attention focused primarily on administrative reforms, social welfare measures, and the institutional development as well as personnel restructuring of the municipal school system. Religious events and regional economic themes also accompanied the public life of the spa town during this period. →
