Daily report.
Meran, February 1. The grand target-shooting match that His Imperial Highness Archduke John, as owner of the fine knightly castle at Schönna in the Burggrafenamt, will host for his Tyrolean marksmen is already occupying the imaginations of our enthusiastic shooters. Regarding the date when this elevated celebration will unite our distinguished patron and prize-giver, as well as our brave shooting brethren from every valley and mountain here in joy and delight, I can inform you that May 18 has tentatively been chosen as the opening day. For the main prizes, twelve banners in total have been designated, three for each of the four estates. They bear the colours black and yellow, with the imperial eagle; white and red, with the Austrian inescutcheon; white (the regional colour) with the delightful red Tyrolean eagle; white and green (the marksmen's colour) with the coat of arms of the Count of Meran. For the Tyrolean marksmen, in their time-tested strength of conviction, in their fresh, lively, battle-tested character, in their eternally youthful skill of hitting the bullseye on the target and the heart in the chest of the enemy, this festival will offer a fresh opportunity to display this splendid facet before the eyes of the noblest of all princes. Establishment of an Infant Day-Care Nursery in Meran
Following an initiative by the Catholic association and the efforts of a newly established women's association, an infant day-care nursery was opened in Meran. Housed in the town hospital, the institution provides daytime supervision, meals, and early education by the Sisters of Mercy for children aged two to six from destitute families.
1851 at a glance
In 1851, social events, religious activities, and imperial grants shaped life in and around Merano. Alongside a well-attended popular mission in Partschins, preparations for the grand marksmanship festival at Schenna Castle, endowed by Archduke John, took center stage. Furthermore, the opening of a childcare facility in the hospital building and imperial financial aid following storm damages reflect ongoing social commitment and state support. →
