Austrian Monarchy.

Merano, 12 Nov. The undersigned teaching staff fulfills a duty of gratitude and believes it serves the gymnasial school system well by bringing to public knowledge the following recognition of merit, issued on behalf of the Ministry of Education through the provincial school authority to the local parish organist, Mr. Johann Kostner, for his services in promoting vocal instruction at the gymnasium in Merano.

To the parish organist Mr. J. Kostner in Merano. The provincial school authority has learned from reports of the provisional gymnasium directorate there that you not only generously covered the costs of vocal instruction for 19 pupils in the past school year 1849/50, but have also offered to support this branch of instruction there in the same manner during the commenced school year 1850/51. The provincial school authority would therefore in any event have fulfilled the pleasant duty of expressing its warmest gratitude to you, even had it not been prompted by the high Ministry of Education, to whom your benevolence toward the studying youth in Merano has not gone unnoticed. Please accept this gratitude, together with the request to maintain, if possible, your kind disposition toward the singing pupils at the local lyceal gymnasium in the future as well.

Innsbruck, 31 Oct. 1850.

From the k. k. Provincial School Authority for Tyrol and Vorarlberg.

The undersigned teaching staff believes it is guilty of no immodesty in adding the observation that in the current academic year 27 pupils attend vocal instruction, and 46 attend the drawing classes taught by the painter Mr. Friedrich Waßmann of Hamburg. 1850 at a glance

The year 1850 in Meran was shaped by administrative changes following its elevation to the seat of a district authority, alongside severe storm damage in the summer that triggered extensive relief efforts. At the same time, educational advancements with the establishment of the upper secondary school, significant infrastructure projects, and high-ranking imperial visits such as the federal target-shooting event marked the town's rise as a prominent regional center. These developments reflect Meran's transition into an important administrative and tourist hub. →
