To the undersigned military commander, the following letter was delivered by the honorable municipal magistrate of Meran through Mayor Joseph Valentin Haller, together with the sum of 210 fl. RW.:

Most Noble Field Marshal Lieutenant!

Through two campaigns we have now followed the victorious course of our army in Italy, exalted beyond all praise, with a feeling of apprehension over the sorrowful future lot of so many a noble, courageous warrior, even as we shared that confidence in the happiest outcome which the just cause and the spirit of such an army, under such leaders, could not fail to instill in us all.

This army can only be envied for the pride with which it stands before Europe; for in the recognition bestowed upon its venerable aged leader lies the verdict of an entire world; his praise alone guarantees its imperishable fame, and secures for our imperial state the preservation of the beloved dynasty, the steadfastness of the law, and the return of general order and tranquility.

As a token of this heartfelt conviction, the City of Meran sends to you, Most Noble Field Marshal Lieutenant, the sum of 210 fl. RW. in voluntary contributions for the wounded victors of Custoza and Novara, with special consideration for our valiant Kaiserjäger Regiment.

Herein let our admiration, our love, and our gratitude also be expressed, which we feel compelled to render to this — to such an army!

May the Most Noble Field Marshal Lieutenant accept — with the request that this modest contribution be directed to its appointed purpose — the expressions of distinguished veneration and high esteem, with which remains

The most humble municipal magistrate.

Meran, March 1349. “Joseph Val. Haller, Mayor.”

I bring this noble-minded and patriotic gift to public notice with a moved heart and the warmest gratitude, and I will conscientiously direct it to its intended purpose.

Innsbruck, April 2, 1849.

The Military Commander: Eliatschek, Field Marshal Lieutenant.
