Rules of conduct for a gentleman according to Punch magazine
A short item from the British satirical magazine Punch mocks 19th-century social conventions. It contrasts the gentleman's license for severe moral transgressions with the strict prohibition of any breach of superficial etiquette.

In one of its recent issues, Punch compiles what a gentleman may and may not do. He is allowed to kill a man in a duel, but not to eat young peas with a knife. He may thrash a night watchman, but not ask twice for soup. He must pay his gambling debts, but need not concern himself with bills from tradesmen. He must never forget what he owes to himself, yet quite well what his tailor has to claim from him. He may even go bankrupt, but never and under no circumstances carry a parcel or appear on the street without gloves.

The year 1848 in Merano and its surroundings was defined by the political upheavals of the March Revolution, the introduction of constitutional rights, and the repercussions of the Italian unrest. While the population formed rifle companies for territorial defense and raised donations for wounded soldiers, the region was directly integrated into the Frankfurt National Assembly through the deputy Beda Weber. At the same time, Merano remained a prominent spa destination, as evidenced by the summer stay of King William I of Württemberg. →
