Avalanche strikes the Thalhof in the Merano judicial district
On 26 January 1837, an avalanche destroyed the dwelling house of the Thalhof in the Merano judicial district. Johann Gilg and his wife miraculously survived unharmed in bed, while their children had already departed for early morning mass.

On the 26th of last month, at 5 o'clock in the morning, a snow avalanche broke loose on the mountain above the Thalhof in the judicial district of Merano, headed straight for this farmstead, and hurled the dwelling house more than a hundred paces into the abyss. The house lay in ruins in the depths, but the two peasants Johann Gilg and his wife, who were still lying in bed, escaped unharmed in the most miraculous manner. The children of these peasants had already left for the early church service.
