Death of Anna Ladurner, Widow of Andreas Hofer

Passeier, Dec. 9. On the 6th of this month at 8 o'clock in the morning, Anna Ladurner, widow of Andreas Hofer, who is so celebrated in our patriotic history, died at the age of 72 years. Ever since the fateful catastrophe of 1809, Hofer's widow lived, unconcerned with the outside world, in quiet seclusion on her estate at the Sand, finding in the filial devotion and care of her beloved daughters alleviation of her deeply felt sorrows. Yet even the enjoyment of these domestic joys was denied her in the late evening of her life; three of her married daughters died within the brief span of scarcely three years in the prime of life, and it is only a few days since she was deprived of all support by the death of her only remaining unmarried daughter. This loss broke the heart of the deeply distressed, forsaken mother, who had endured every turn of fortune with such heroism, and she found in the hereafter the peace that was not granted to her here below. Hardened in the school of adversity, she possessed the firmness of character of a mature man, and her deeply reserved soul, which harboured the noblest sentiments that were unfortunately so often misinterpreted and misjudged, was open only to proven friends.
