An ox of rare size in Meran

On June 3, an ox of rare size, not yet fully five years old, was slaughtered in Meran. In height it exceeded any ordinary man's height, and weighed in the four quarters alone 12 hundredweight 25 pounds. Of fat, since it had always been kept well but never properly fattened, it had no more than 304 pounds. All the more marbled with fat was the meat. The hide had the comparatively low weight, in relation to its size, of 135 pounds. — This was the second specimen that the former provincial representative of the Burggrafenamt district, Johann Spitaler, Pollinger in Mais, reared to such an extent. Previously, an ox from the same breeding cow, which appeared unremarkable, had been exhibited as a rarity in Bozen the past year after being fattened for a year, and was subsequently taken to Italy.
