Correction Regarding the Wine Trade in Bozen

Correction.

Letters received later from Bozen give us the following different views regarding the news from the same place reported in No. 51 of our paper this year, which the editors hereby add primarily out of a duty to truth and discarding any private interest: “The unusually long-lasting and great summer heat of 1822 meant that even in those regions where the grape rarely thrives to full maturity, the grape harvest was completed early and everywhere without exception produced a good, strong, and tasty wine. For this reason, a larger quantity of good wine than ever before was offered for sale at the same time in all regions, and there was therefore not the usual demand for the wine from Bozen, which wine merchants and innkeepers used in other years to improve inferior varieties due to its high content of spirit and coloring matter. It is to be attributed to this reason and not, as is falsely alleged, to the poor quality of the local product, that the wine prices of Bozen did not maintain their usual predominance in the wine-growing Etschland; yet they were, and still are, in equilibrium with the prices of other regions. It is incorrect that wines are falling in price here or anywhere else, that the best varieties are being offered for sale in the taverns at 10 and 8 Kreuzer, and that the wine of Bozen can no longer withstand the competition of the neighboring Etschland.”
