Overview
July 1850 in Meran and its surroundings was marked by contrasting events: on the one hand, the region celebrated the establishment of the first free municipality with Mayor Joseph Haller and the opening of the district court in St. Leonhard in Passeier. On the other hand, a devastating cloudburst accompanied by severe mudslides in Algund, Gratsch, and surrounding areas caused catastrophic damage and claimed nine lives.

Constitution of the Free Municipality of Merano and Election of Mayor Joseph Haller

On 11 July 1850, the citizens of Meran gathered at the Post inn to celebrate the constitution of their first free municipality and the election of Joseph Haller as mayor. In the presence of District Captain Kopp and other dignitaries, formal speeches and toasts marked the occasion in honour of the Imperial House and the new municipal self-government.

Inauguration of the Imperial-Royal District Court in St. Leonhard in Passeier

In St. Leonhard in Passeier, the inauguration of the Imperial-Royal District Court was celebrated with mortar salutes, a church service, and official speeches. District Judge Sebastian von Isser and local dignitaries marked the occasion alongside the local population with target shooting and an evening supper.

On the basis of the preceding elections of the committees prescribed by law, the election of the new Meran municipal administration took place this morning. Mr. Valentin Haller was appointed mayor, and the merchant Mr. Verdroß, the estate owner Mr. Alois Putz, and the merchant Mr. Alois Kirchlechner were appointed councillors. Meran, 3 July 1850.
