September 1845

Overview

In September 1845, severe storms in Tyrol caused devastating flooding of the Adige and other rivers as well as a massive rockfall near Steg, interrupting major road connections. At the same time, Bishop Heinrich Hofstetter of Passau traveled through the region and visited the mystic Dominika Lazzari after a brief stop with the Capuchins in Merano.

Severe Floods and Rockfall in Tyrol

Reports from Tyrol chronicle heavy flooding of the Etsch, Rienz, and other rivers, alongside a major rockfall near Steg. Thoroughfares from Schlanders through Botzen to Trient and Ala are cut off or severely damaged, while quarters of Trient remain submerged under rising waters.
