Meran, 6 December (Corresp.) We can join the chorus that has arisen across all the countries of Europe regarding the mild air and wondrously rare phenomena of plant and animal life at this time of year. Since a persistent, almost tepid rain softened and opened the soil, awakening dormant life, the sun has been drawing violets and cockchafers from the open ground. The meadows glow in a fresh, vivid green, such as normally only sprouts forth in the days of spring.
In the studio of the sculptor Pendl the Elder, whose artistic merit Vienna challenged but London appreciated, several statues stand partly completed, partly near completion. Two of them, the crucified Redeemer in life size and on a smaller scale, are bound for North America; two others, a Dolorosa and an Immaculata, are destined for Italy.

At the same time, infrastructure projects, spa tourism, and educational institutions continued to develop, while political shifts toward neo-absolutism were counterbalanced by local civic engagement. →
