Germany.

Frankfurt, 11 July. Presumably as a result of the English Titles Bill, Lord Cowley, currently envoy of Great Britain to the German Confederation and to this city, has requested from the Senate the communication of all negotiations conducted by Frankfurt and the other states of the Upper Rhine ecclesiastical province with the Holy See regarding the conclusion of a concordat. The Senate entrusted the Catholic church and school commission with this, and it willingly complied; however, the parish priest Beda Weber, who is also a member of that commission, enclosed an explicit statement that the Holy Father had rejected the agreement of the Upper Rhine states by a brief of 30 June 1830 and that it was therefore not to be regarded as legally valid. England can take an example from these states and petty states as to how to subjugate and patronise the Church. Frankfurt will doubtless be proud that mighty England seeks counsel from it. — At this moment, an address of thanks to our worthy Spiritual Councillor and parish priest Beda Weber is being prepared here. As is well known, he declined a very honourable call to Gratz in order to continue working here. Rarely does a man enjoy more widespread esteem, yet rarely does anyone display equal activity. Beda Weber's work is truly to be called blessed, and the fruits are already visible now. What won him the bourgeoisie in particular is his plain and straightforward nature, which knows no difference between rich and poor.

Controversy over the Conferral of Honorary Citizenship in Meran

A letter published in the Bote für Tirol strongly criticizes the conferral of honorary citizenship upon a spa guest in Meran. The recipient is accused of having publicly ridiculed the municipal coat of arms and the civic committee, while the municipal council is said to have yielded out of fear of an influential faction.

1851 at a glance

The year 1851 in Merano was strongly characterized by the Tyrolean target-shooting festival sponsored by Archduke John and celebrated solemnly in early summer. Alongside these large-scale festivities, public attention focused primarily on administrative reforms, social welfare measures, and the institutional development as well as personnel restructuring of the municipal school system. Religious events and regional economic themes also accompanied the public life of the spa town during this period. →
