Clarification.
Meran, 24 February. The appeal of the Meran Catholic branch association for charitable contributions toward the establishment of an upper gymnasium in Meran (in the supplement to the Tiroler Wochenblatt, no. 23) may give rise to misunderstandings in several respects. The undersigned teaching staff therefore considers it a duty to itself and the public to forestall these through rectifying remarks.
1. The upper gymnasium in Meran does not need to be newly established; it has already existed with ministerial approval since the beginning of the current school year and will attain its full completion in the coming academic year with the addition of the eighth class.
2. The teaching staff had neither direct nor indirect involvement in the appeal—the phrasing of which it would much rather have seen in another form!—and learned of it only through the newspaper.
3. The teaching staff has the honour of knowing gymnasiastic institutions whose members belong to no religious order, nor even to the clerical estate, and gladly seizes this opportunity to state publicly that it admires their pedagogical tact no less than their talents, wishing them, as well as its own upright endeavours, the greatest success.
4. Furthermore, the teaching staff neither fails to recognise the laudable intentions of the Catholic association in Meran to support the local gymnasium in its needs, nor wishes to be ungrateful for the recognition of its endeavours and achievements; yet just as we wish the association good fortune in its collections, on the other hand we would like to call out to our friends regarding the praise bestowed upon us:
Claudite jam rivos, pueri: sat prata biberunt!
The teaching staff of the Gymnasium in Meran.

1850 at a glance
The year 1850 in Merano was shaped by administrative changes following the political restructuring of Tyrol and by significant developments and debates in education, particularly concerning the status of the upper secondary school. Alongside infrastructure and security challenges such as river regulation and responding to a major fire in Obermais, public life was also defined by broader political developments and preparations for the Archduke's summer visit. →
