Innsbruck, 28 October. The Allgemeine Augsburger Zeitung of the 27th of this month carries a correspondence from Bozen dated 20 October, in which among other things the following is reported:
“For some time now we have noticed their (the reactionary party's) leaders in active operation: Fr. Albert Jäger travelled through the Oethzal, Passeyer, and the upper Adige down to Bozen, and recently held a peasant congress behind closed doors in Meran.”
I was the constant companion of Professor Jäger on his vacation journey through Selrain, Oethzal, Passeyer, in and around Meran and Bozen; day and night throughout the entire journey, I barely left his side for a single hour; thus I surely must have detected at least a trace of his active campaigning for the reactionary party, allegedly noticed for some time, as well as of his peasant congress held behind closed doors in Meran. Yet — although in a position to judge this like no one else, I must declare that the entire passage concerning Professor Jäger in the mentioned article is a sheer fabrication, a despicable lie. The straight, open, and honourable character of Professor Jäger alone might have convinced the author of this article from Bozen that a man like Jäger does not agitate peasants behind closed doors. Prof. Schenach.
