Meran, 30 April. *Who does not sometimes, even in summer, like to think back to the blossoming almond tree of spring! Therefore, let it be permitted to me as well to glance back in time and recall a foundation established at the beginning of this year, which has already borne blossom and fruit alike. – In order to counter the folly of certain carnival revelers with a stronger, higher ideal, it has always been the desire of the Church, especially in those days of worldly pleasure, to consider those souls looking higher and to keep them away from empty trivialities through the celebration of the Liturgy of the Hours. What has been done in Meran regarding this church feast has already been reported to you. Since in this respect nothing is left to be desired here, a citizen of Meran has endowed a church in the Upper Vinschgau (Burgeis) with a foundation of 300 florins, which, combined with that brought about through the efforts of the local parish priest, made it possible to fulfill that wish of the Church and not lag behind so many neighboring parishes. With such an active spirit, it is clear that the realm of mere 'pious wishes' is being relegated to ever narrower bounds. – The Book Easter once again bears many a fragrant blossom from South Tyrol in its garlands this year. For the readers of the Katholische Blätter, the most important should be: 'Life of Johanna of the Cross, by Beda Weber.' It is published in Regensburg by Manz. With good reason, we expect inimitable freshness and vividness of presentation, and an insightful grasp of the contemplative life of that blessed woman, which intervened deeply into the events of her time, from this South Tyrolean pen.
