Statistics.

In Tyrol and Vorarlberg, a population of 766,738 souls was counted in the past year across an area of 519 4/10 square miles. If one compares this population figure with that contained in the Nationalkalender für Tirol und Vorarlberg, 1st year, 1821, a population increase of 34,655 souls over five years is revealed, making the annual increase 6,931. Of this figure, 1. the circle on the Italian borders (Rovereto), with an area of 347 24/100 sq. miles, accounts for 99,353 souls; 2. that of Trient, with an area of 78 56/100 miles, accounts for 165,159 souls; 3. that on the Adige (Botzen), with an area of 60 72/100 sq. miles, accounts for 104,145 souls; 4. that in the Puster Valley and on the Eisack (Brunecken), with an area of 103 76/100 sq. miles, accounts for 98,286 souls; 5. that in the Lower Inn and Wipp Valleys (Schwatz), with an area of 91 36/100 sq. miles, accounts for 124,360 souls; 6. that in the Upper Inn Valley and Vinschgau (Imst), with an area of 106 84/100 sq. miles, accounts for 89,199 souls; 7. that in Vorarlberg (Bregenz), with an area of 44 23/100 sq. miles, accounts for 86,236 souls.

The number of births in the entire province amounted to 25,701, namely 3,815 in the circle of Rovereto, 6,899 in the circle of Trient, 3,134 in the circle of Botzen, 2,532 in the circle of Brunecken, 3,308 in the circle of Schwatz, 2,703 in the circle of Imst, and 3,310 in the circle of Bregenz.

The number of deceased amounted to 17,669; of these, 2,554 had died in Circle I, 4,176 in Circle II, 2,359 in Circle III, 2,008 in Circle IV, 2,529 in Circle V, 1,790 in Circle VI, and 2,253 in Circle VII.

The number of marriages was 4,382 in the entire land; of these, Circle I accounted for 722, Circle II for 1,167, Circle III for 590, Circle IV for 440, Circle V for 549, Circle VI for 427, and Circle VII for 487.

Regarding the population increase mentioned at the beginning, it is further noted that the circles ranked in the following order: Trient 8,767, Rovereto 6,131, Schwatz 4,830, Bregenz 4,270, Imst 3,879, Botzen 3,777, Brunecken 3,001 souls.

In 1826, the custom of replacing New Year's visits with donation cards spread throughout Tyrol. The parish of Mais near Merano successfully used this new practice to collect a considerable sum for needy schoolchildren for the first time.
