New Year excuse cards and troop movements in Tyrol
In 1821, so-called excuse cards were sold in Botzen, Bruneck, and other Tyrolean judicial districts in place of traditional New Year visits to raise funds for local workhouses and poorhouses. Additionally, the report details military movements and the quartering of the Imperial-Royal Infantry Regiment Argenteau in Bruneck.

In the district town of Botzen, the new excuse cards introduced for the year 1821 for the benefit of the local workhouse, in place of troublesome New Year visits, met with sales that honor the enlightened and charitable spirit of the town's inhabitants. The amount collected totals 258 fl. *) In the judicial districts of Meran, Altenburg, Neumarkt, Tramin, and Salurn, too, people participated in a noble manner in the fine custom of celebrating the first day of the year through acts of charity for the benefit of local poor-relief institutions, using the proceeds from a significant number of excuse cards.
Bruneck, Jan 10. The excuse cards were introduced here this year as well. Thanks to the generous purchase of 85 cards, the poor benefit from the significant income of 104 fl. – In the month of December, around 3,000 military horses passed through here. – Today, the staff and the second battalion of the Imperial-Royal Infantry Regiment Argenteau are stationed in this town and the surrounding area. This regiment is admired everywhere for its fine bearing and exemplary discipline.
