Fatal Lightning Strike on the Jaufen Pass

On 31 July 1824, the family of fruit merchant Anton Gufler was caught in a severe thunderstorm while crossing the Jaufen Pass. Seeking shelter under trees, a lightning strike killed the two daughters Maria and Magdalena Gufler. The newspaper reports the incident as a stark warning against taking shelter under trees during thunderstorms.
