June 1821

Overview
Following heavy rainfall at the end of May 1821, severe flooding occurred throughout Tyrol in June, affecting Merano and its surroundings. The Adige and Passer rivers burst their banks, causing considerable devastation to roads, bridges, dams, and agriculture. In places, the damage to infrastructure and agriculture matched the scale of the catastrophic year 1817.

Severe Weather and Devastating Floods Across Tyrol

Following heavy downpours in late May 1821, all of Tyrol from Innsbruck to Valsugana suffered severe flooding. The Sill, Eisack, Etsch, Passer, and Fersina rivers overflowed their banks, causing extensive destruction to roads, bridges, dikes, and fields. Damage to infrastructure and agriculture matched or surpassed that of the disastrous year 1817 in several areas.
