Chronicle

April 1821

Overview
In April 1821, the district of Bolzano was shaped by hydraulic engineering works along the Isarco and Adige rivers and agricultural trials with Chinese mountain rice, which yielded positive results in Merano among other locations. Furthermore, reports documented the historical tradition of the Hohlepfann beacon fires near Merano, which were lit sparingly this year due to fire safety concerns. These records reflect both local infrastructure projects and the preservation of traditional customs.

Cultivation Experiments with Chinese Mountain Rice in the Bozen District in 1820

In 1820, cultivation experiments with Chinese mountain rice were carried out in the Bozen district. While trials in higher-altitude locations failed due to harsh weather and cold winds, locations such as Bozen, Lana, Meran, Andrian, and Tramin yielded positive results. District Captain Ritter von Hauer plans further trials in the Bozen valley plain in the coming year.
