Tyrol.
From the Vinschgau, Sept. 4. (Corresp.) A certainly rare celebration was observed by the Benedictine Abbey of Marienberg on August 26, namely the priestly jubilee of its three highest dignitaries, the Prelate Karl Mayr, the Prior Valentin Spitaler, and the Prefect Plazidus Degeser.
The solemn service was attended by numerous clergy, all the abbey priests, the superiors of neighbouring monasteries, the heads of the courts of Glurns and Nauders, the mayor and several notables from Meran, many dignitaries, and a large crowd of local people. Pastor Kappeller of Laatsch used the occasion of the day in a vigorous, spirited speech to shed light on our deplorable contemporary turmoil, by which this benevolent institution had also been challenged—an institution from which so many learned men have emerged in recent times, to which the Obergymnasium in Meran owes its existence, and within which so many charitable deeds are quietly bestowed.
The festive banquet in the great monastery hall brought together some 80 persons from all walks of life; successful poems and an exquisite vocal choir expressed general homage to the highly revered jubilarians, while the accomplished representative of the town of Meran and Dr. Mazegger urged the gathering with an earnest address to support the educational institute in Meran.
Thus the guests departed with wishes for the continued long-lasting well-being of this venerable trio of jubilarians.
