Obituary for Frater Zölestin Gschwari at the Meran Benedictine College

Meran, 14 May. (Corresp.) On the 8th of this month, the Benedictine Abbey of Marienberg suffered another grievous loss. Few months have passed since the death of the pious and meritorious parish priest of Burgeis, Father Ponifazius Rungg (died 24 Dec 1846), and already on the date mentioned above, around 10 o'clock in the forenoon, Frater Zölestin Gschwari, not yet professed, 24 years of age, followed him, succumbing at the Benedictine College in Meran to a pulmonary affliction from which he had suffered for about a year. His passing seemed to us to merit a public notice, as with him a fine talent for poetry was carried to the grave. Quiet and unpretentious, as was his whole nature, he shared the sweet gifts of his pious muse with only a few confidants, a couple of which we reproduce here. May the hand of a friend lay a wreath of selected songs from him as an offering upon the tomb of one departed all too soon, who is sorely missed by his confreres and all who knew him for his noble character and great talents.
