Botzen, 13 Feb. The supreme birthday celebration of His Imperial-Royal Apostolic Majesty, our adored Monarch, was commemorated yesterday in this district capital with renewed and heartfelt participation. Already at daybreak, the ringing of bells in all the town's churches, combined with the firing of mortars, proclaimed the festive nature of the day. At 9 o'clock, all princely and municipal authorities assembled at the district office building, whence the festive procession proceeded to the collegiate and parish church for the solemn High Mass, celebrated by the Reverend Provost and town parish priest. In addition to the heads of the I. R. Gymnasium and the I. R. District Primary School, already assembled there together with their professors, teachers, and school youth, the house of the Lord was filled with a large crowd of local residents praying and giving thanks to God for the preservation of our beloved Father of the Country. On Johanns-Platz, the garrison of the Kaiser-Jäger Regiment paraded, firing the customary volleys during the High Mass and Te Deum. At midday, to glorify the festivity, a banquet of 80 covers was held at the Kaiser-Krone inn, attended not only by the officials of all authorities and the officers of the local garrison, but also by the most respected residents of the district capital. To the sound of trumpets and kettledrums and the thunder of mortars, the warmest toasts were proposed to the enduring health of His Majesty the Emperor, Her Majesty the Empress, and the entire most august Archducal House, answered by those present with ceaseless cheers. In the evening, the theatre was most festively illuminated. The announced performance was preceded by a specially composed prologue suited to the sublime celebration of the day, followed by the singing of the national anthem "Gott erhalte etc. etc.", during which the liveliest enthusiasm of the public assembled in the packed house was expressed in the most moving manner by repeated loud cheers of "Vivat". Thus we concluded this most festive day anew with the fervent wish that the almighty Ruler of human destinies may grant us the fortune of being able to celebrate it many more times.

1827 at a glance

In 1827, public life was shaped by historical studies of Katzenstein Castle, official celebrations for the Emperor's birthday, and the pastoral visits of Prince-Bishop Franz Xaver of Trent. In view of the city's ongoing economic decline, local authorities under Mayor Ferdinand also worked towards the realization of a new road connection across the Jaufen Pass.
