July 1841

Overview

In July 1841, Archduke John undertook a mountain journey from Merano via the Timmelsjoch pass and the Ötz valley to Feldkirch, receiving a festive welcome. At the same time, a severe mountain storm with mudslides in the Naif gorge and the overflowing Rametzbach caused considerable damage to the infrastructure of Merano and Obermais.

Flooding and Debris Flows along the Rametzbach

On the night of 5 to 6 July 1841, a severe mountain storm triggered debris flows in the Naif gorge. The Rametzbach swelled to record levels, destroying water conduits for Meran and Obermais and inundating surrounding lands and the highway.

Archduke John's Journey from Meran to Vorarlberg

Archduke John travels from Meran over the Timmelsjoch and the Ötztal to Landeck, inspecting the fortifications at Nauders. He then continues his alpine journey via Paznaun and Montafon to Feldkirch, where he receives a ceremonial welcome.
